The 101st Engineer Battalion is the oldest unit in the U.S. Army. Established December 13, 1636, as the East Regiment in Essex County, MA, it is one of three units that has the Lexington Battle Streamer. During the Battle of Trenton, when Gen Washington crossed the Deleware, it was the East Regiment that manned the boats.
In 1861, the unit sailed the USS Constitution (Old Ironsides) from Annapolis, Maryland to New York Harbor to keep it safe from the Confederate Army. The unit has eight Medal of Honor recipients, five from the Battle of Gettysburg alone. In WW2, the unit provided the maps for GEN Patton's army during the Battle of the Bulge.
In recent history, the unit provided a rapid response task force during the Democratic National Convention in 2004, sent 4 of the units in support of OIF and Kosovo, and cleared over 1000 miles of road during a huge ice storm in Massachusetts in December 2008. Currently the 101st is assigned in Bagdad, Iraq, for Engineer mission support.
