Thanks to US Forces Afghanistan and Armed Forces Entertainment, Adopt-a-Soldier Platoon was able to go to Afghanistan January 20-29 to entertain personnel supporting Operation Enduring Freedom. It was an exciting trip and we are now allowed to report all our activity now that we're home! It was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to support the brave men and women over there and we are grateful to Armed Forces Entertainment and USFOR-A (and our Military Liaison Ralph Romine) for their approval and fantastic assistance and support!
Once again, the Washington Redskins Cheerleaders joined us to entertain personnel there! This Tour we also included "America's Elvis," Captain "Woody" Woodall, to be part of the entertainment as well. "Elvis" performed with the Cheerleaders during their many variety shows. It was an incredible journey!
We were allowed to visit much of Afghanistan - four Commands - including RC-East, Kabul Cluster, RC-West and Camp Leatherneck. Bases and camps included: Bagram AF, Camp Lightning, FOB Fenty, Camp Phoenix, Camp Morehead, Shindand AB, Camp Arena, Camp Leatherneck, Camp Kopp and Camp Vose. Amazing just doesn't cover it!!!!
We adopted a lot of new Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines; Special Forces units, Seabees and so many brave men and women of our country. We arrived in one Special Forces camp only eight days after one of their bravest was killed and we have offered to make KIA bracelets for the team and we pledged $1,000 to kick off the education fund for the 6-mos-old boy he left behind. There is so much now that we have to do!!!! And we will find the way to do it!!!!
We hope to post a documentary video soon of our adventure but until then, we will begin to post pictures of the trip and video clips as we can format them (our first appears above on Afghan girls we met at a bazaar). Special thanks to Marc Bierman of USFOR-A for his incredible coordination and assistance. The banner below shows many of the companies and organizations that stepped up to help us raise the funds and donations of goodies necessary to make this trip successful in Afghanistan! We also want to thank MAJ Hood, CSM Owens, CSM Hernandez and many more of the great Soldiers who co-ordinated our visits to the Commands.
Special thanks go to the Washington Redskins Cheerleaders - Stephanie Jojokian and Signe Hilton who coordinated the team; Ashley, their captain on the trip; Adriana, Allison, Laura, Mila, Rachel, Stephanie and Truly, some of the nicest and most amazing young women you will ever meet. And Capt. Woody, "America's Elvis," who added so much dimension to the Tour and gave not only our female Warriors a lot of fun, but our Coalition Forces as well, who loved him!!!! For those who don't know Woody, he leads a non-profit called Fire Fighters Assisting Armed Forces Families, he volunteers for The Independence Fund (who also supported the trip), the Gary Sinise Foundation and has devoted his life since 9/11 to the Wounded Heroes. Woody is like the "Mayor" of Walter Reed and he provides us with great insight on how we can help our Wounded Heroes!
As for Coalition Forces, we met Warriors from: Albania, Australia, Bulgaria, Canada, France, Italy, Jordan, Korea, Mongolia, Romania, Spain and the United Arab Emirates (and probably more I didn't realize where they were from!). It was really heartwarming to know America is NOT in this war on terror alone! Thanks to our Allies!
Thanks also to our own team. Our Treasurer Allan Virginia and our Veterans Liaison, Tamber Norton, brought expertise and energy to the table, along with our President, Alan K. Also want to thank our fabulous designers - Ten Gun Design - from Edmonds, WA. They do all our design work and they created the great "look and feel" of our Military Appreciation Tour logo, created the t-shirts for us as well as the posters. Thanks also to Leatherback as always for being there for us with posters and Motion Board for not only printing the t-shirts but donating some long boards we gave away in AFG to our Troopers! Thanks all!!!! More to come...
"America's Elvis," John A. "Woody" Woodall, will be accompanying us on our Military Appreciation Tour and will be part of the Washington Redskins Cheerleaders variety show! Woody is well-known in the charity circles we run with. A retired Raleigh NC, Fire Captain, he was a Ground Zero after 9/11 leading all NC firefighters, liaising with FDNY and emergency services, and has devoted his last 13 years to helping our Troops, most especially our Wounded Heroes! Thanks Woody!!!
How Cool is This??? Motion Boards create long board for our Troopers and we will give away three in AFG! The Motion Board Shop in Seattle, WA, printed all our special t-shirts for the Tour at their cost. They also made three "long boards" for those Troopers who like to skateboard to get around. We will be giving one of each at three locations. Thanks Casey, Jason and the Motion team!
