Joint Base Balad Softball League Support:
Softball is a great way for our troops to let off steam and get some much-needed recreation. It's a great morale booster. The 76th IBCT currently runs the softball leagues on Joint Base Balad (formerly known as LSA Anaconda), the biggest American base in Iraq and AaSP is supporting the league by supplying softballs and encouraging Major League Baseball (MLB) teams to provide souvenirs for the soldiers in the league.
For several years, the New York Yankees sent 200 replica hats for Softball League participants. A great big 'thank you' to the New York Yankees organization and to Rob, our sports director, for getting this done. What a great tribute to our troops to have this fine sports organization send their generous gifts. Additionally, the Atlanta Braves sent 33 replica hats, 24 T-shirts, and lots of pennants and magazines for our troops. Way to go Braves! Also, we've gotten materials from the Houston Astros and the Philadelphia Phillies. Thanks guys!
Earlier, the Fathead company sent us four extra large team logos for the outfield walls! They included the New York Mets, the Chicago Cubs, the Boston Red Sox and the Los Angeles Angels! These wall hangings are now proudly displayed on the outfield fences. They are already a great boost to the morale of our soldiers, especially after weather damaged their field. (Fathead had previously sent us Fathead cutouts of a Dallas Cowboy Cheerleader (Becca) and Brett Favre for the Anaconda Super Bowl Party. So, THANK YOU Fathead company!)
In 2006, we supported the summer leagues and sent 12 dozen softballs and sets of bases to the 35th ASG, the unit then managing the league before their redeployment. At that time, SSG Corey M. was the coordinator.
Tom Hoey of Efinger Sporting Goods of Bound Brook, NJ, has been our staunch partner in our support of the softball leagues. Tom has provided special pricing and ships softballs directly to Iraq for us. Thanks Tom!
