DHL has been supporting our troops long before Adopt-a-Soldier Platoon asked for help to ship an 80-in custom-built screen to Iraq back in 2005. But since then, DHL and AaSP have been great partners in getting much-needed and sought-after goodies to Iraq and Afghanistan. Whether it be Christmas trees, Girl Scout Cookies, Super Bowl souvenirs or a 42-inch wide screen TV for a hospital in Kandahar, DHL has been a great Special Friend to AaSP and our troops. 25,000 Pizzas to Iraq and Afghanistan
June 2009 Update: On June 19, 2009, DHL teamed up with Pizza for Heroes to delivery 25,000 pizzas to our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. The pizzas came from Pizza Uno in Chicago, IL. DHL donated its logistics to get these tastes of America to our warriors. Some of Adopt-a-Soldier Platoon's units received these pizzas and we are grateful to DHL Express for this extremely generous donation for our troops! Kudos to Cain Moodie, Director of the DHL Gateway, and all the DHL team! Quite incredible! Here are some video news clips on the event!

For several years, DHL at JFK International Airport has teamed up with the Nassau County, NY, Girl Scouts to deliver "American cookies and love" to our troops in the Middle East. In April 2009, DHL again shipped pallets of these delicious cookies to units in Iraq and Afghanistan, many of which are adoptees of the Adopt-a-Soldier Platoon.
AaSP salutes the Nassau County Girl Scouts and DHL for this incredibly generous show of compassion and generosity for our troops. Girl Scout cookies are a part of Americana, which the troops really appreciate, and it helps them feel more "at home" in their difficult environment. Thanks Cathy O' and the team!

For several years now, DHL at JFK Int'l Airport has teamed up with Dee's Nursery, Adelis Security, VFW of New York State, Nassau County Police, Port Authority Police, local merchants and local residents to send Christmas trees to our soldiers in the Middle East. Adopt-a-Soldier Platoon units have often been the recipients of some of these trees and AaSP has worked with DHL to provide them with contact information for various units through AaSP's military network.
On Monday, Dec. 8, 2008, DHL again organized an event to send live trees and ornaments to the MIddle East. Some of our units that have been sent trees include the NJ ARNG's 50th IBCT in Iraq; the Balad AF Theater Hospital, MWR program and 51st Signal Battalion (Exp) at Balad AB, Iraq; Craig Joint Theater Hospital at Bagram AB in Afghanistan; a Combat Stress unit and Marine aviation unit in AFG; and B-Battery, 2-20 FA in Iraq. Thanks to DHL for managing this great annual project.

The trees arrived!
Christmas trees have arrived at several locations, including Camp Bucca in southern Iraq, where many NJ ARNG soldiers are stationed, as well as Balad Air Force Theater Hospital at Balad AB. (See below for comments from Balad and also the slide show of pictures from Bucca.)
"TREES MADE IT!!! 6 Real X-Mas trees for the AFTH at Balad. I carried them into the facility and people were stopping me asking if they could smell the trees. It was priceless. Our Morale committee was ecstatic and they are planning a Christmas tree decorating party for this weekend. We’ll have one for our Clinic across the street our CASF across the street and 4 to put up around the facility. Home run again! Thank you DHL and Adopt-a-Soldier Platoon!!" MAJ Michael F., Dec 16, 2008, Balad AF Theater Hosp., Iraq
"Tuskegee Medics, as we prepare for the holidays it’s time to show our spirit by doing some facility decorating together. Let’s trim some trees with our deployed family. Thanks to DHL, Adopt-a-Soldier Platoon and the ‘Thanks to the Troops Event’ we have 6 REAL (smell like pine) Christmas trees to put up and decorate in our facility. The CASF and Clinic will receive one along with decorations and the rest will be put up in the basement where a winter wonderland will be created this weekend in preparation for our Holiday Party. If you would like to help or have decorations that you would like to donate, the Morale Committee will be decorating this Saturday beginning at 1700. We will have medics trimming trees in the Clinic, CASF and basement so please join us if you can." TSgt Chandra D. (Morale NCO), Dec 16, 2008, Balad AF Theater Hosp, Iraq
"Just letting you know how much we appreciate everything you do for us. The BX here is out of Christmas trees so our hospital is Christmas tree-less. I’m the president of the morale committee and I’m not doing a very good job for morale at Christmas with no trees. These trees will be a really big deal. Thank you so much. We always love what you’re able to get for us and you never do things in a small way. God bless you guys! Talk to you soon." TSgt Chandra D. (Morale NCO), Dec 15, 2008, Balad AF Theater Hosp, Iraq
